I’m so excited to be able to share my first kit review with you. For this review, I was given the Mission Pants from Montane and what an awesome piece of kit it was to get to play with.
These trousers have been tested to their limit over the last few months In the Brecon Beacons and the Elan Valley. Being a warm technical trouser I wanted to hold off on using them until the weather went south (or north depending on how much you like winter weather). Montane aims these trousers at mountaineers, designed for hiking, scrambling and climbing.
What's it made from?
The trousers are made of Granite stretch material which as its name suggests is strong, abrasion resistant and slightly stretchy. The material has a Durable Water Resistance layer, which makes them water resistant and wind repellent. The sections of the trousers that are more prone to wear and tear when used mountaineering, (the knees and instep) are specially reinforced by Cordura material.
These trousers have many awesome features. Down the side of each leg is a zip-able vented section with mesh material on the insides. The Stretchy material that the trousers are made of aids a lot in aiding free movement especially when climbing or scrambling.
The Cordura reinforcements on the knees and insteps work a treat. While Climbing up Tryfan in the snow I spent a good amount of time on my knees and the extra reinforcement there helped stop the trouser getting marked and damaged. The reinforced insteps were a godsend to stop me damaging the trousers while focusing on my climbing partner while wearing crampons. At the bottom of each trouser leg is an extendable volume adjuster so that, while the trousers are fairly slim fitting normally the extra adjustment allows you to be able to wear them properly over larger B rated boots (they fit perfectly over my Nepal Extreme’s).
My one problem with these trousers was the belt loops. They are slightly smaller than normal and so I had to buy a new belt to go with the trousers. One last small problem with the trousers was the pockets. On the inside of the right, hand pocket is another small zipped up pocket the zipper is small and hard to use with gloves on. If opened up and you forget then the pocket gets in the way and doesn’t lie in the same direction as the main pocket itself.
In summary, these trousers are an awesome set of all round mountaineering trousers. Weather resistant, wear resistant and really comfy trousers to wear for a long day out in the mountains. The reinforcements all sit in the perfect place without riding around or feeling uncomfortable. They are wind resistant and quick drying meaning that after a long day out in windy and rubbish conditions in the mountains I came back to the bottom and was still warm and dry.
